Group Health embarked on a pilot project to help save Primary Care from a breaking point and provide patients with better care and more access. They started at Group Health’s Factoria Medical Center.

They added more doctors and reduced the number of patients in each doctor’s care, which gave each physician more desk time—enabling them to respond more quickly when patients e-mailed or phoned.

Doctors now have a care team with a dedicated Medical Assistant, Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant and a Clinical Pharmacist. They all worked together, like a wheel, to care for the patient whether in person, on the phone or via e-mail.

What did they find? Happy and healthy patients, satisfied doctors who treat the whole patient, reduced emergency room visits and avoidable hospital stays.

At the end of the first year, Group Health saw the success and is rolling this model out to all of its 26 medical centers. Welcome to the new Group Health.
